Cycling to work
Gonna start cycling in next week - will take half an hour each way. Will save me £60 a month on petrol and I won't have the stress of driving at rush hour amongst mongs. Plus five hours exercise a week is bound to be good for the lungs and ticker. Win win?

Any of you Lycra mob got any tips? Other than avoid small cocked Aussies in XS leather jackets

Please don't do it bruuuuno

you seem like a decent chap and good poster. But I hate cyclists. And I can't stand the thought of the turmoil of trying to work out how to reconcile with liking a cyclist

Re: Cycling to work
Two people at work have had serious accidents whilst cycling to work of late, it seems every time I open the Evening standard some poor cyclist is being reported as dead or seriously injured.

Not sure where you're cycling to bruuuno but stick the £60 mate, London is nowhere near ready for the amount of cyclists on the roads these days.

Re: Cycling to work
Where are you going to/from?

Have you got a waterproof bag cover?

You can't have too many lights.

Get good at changing tyres - you can do it lots of times in advance and just keep putting the same one back on.

Don't wear dark clothes.

Get more lights.

Expect every driver at junctions to not see you. They almost certainly will, but you've got to be ready.

Re: Cycling to work
Has anyone who works near the Gherkin seen that annoying cyclist who wears a full face mask and plays stupid sounds from his bike as he cycles through St Mary's axe? Every morning I plan on putting up a wire across the axe for the cunt the next day.

Thats the sort of stuff I was looking for. As someone who currently drives to work every day I have been guilty of SMIDSY in the past (low sun + pillar) so am very aware.

Will be travelling only 5 miles each way through a major UK city, my route is pretty much all residential streets and cycle paths so looks ok.

Didn't think about the waterproof bag, cheers.

Sounds mental but I was thinking of sticking some tunes on my iphone dock in a rucksack so pedestrians can hear me coming and dont step out in front of me. Plus I want to listen to tunes but think I need to be able to hear whats going on around me so headphones aren't ideal.

Re: Cycling to work
OTB - I've got a mountain bike with supposedly hardcore tyres you reckon I'll still get a lot of punctures? hadn't thought of that

Re: Cycling to work
And one thing I always try and do now when cycling is make eye contact with drivers at junctions (not in a gay way)

Bag cover - something like this is what I use:

http://www.wiggle.co.uk/hump-deluxe-hump-rucksack-cover/

Punctures are tough to say. I find it's all down to what's on the roads (or A127 pavement in my case, which is covered in shit). And if you think you've dodged something with your front wheel, you can bet you'll hit it with your back wheel....

I originally bought a speaker thing that clipped on like a light but it didn't work out. I rely on my bell and shouting if need be, but TBH most pedestrians that don't hear you have got music in their ears, so you'll be wasting your time anyway.

I got my 7 mile ride down to 20 minutes if the lights went my way, so you'll get 5 miles down from 30 mins soon enough, then you won't want to bother with music.
